The post

The Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM) wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in an Innovate UK project, investigating the use of nanomaterials with high performance polymers for laser sintering and fused filament fabrication (FFF). The funded post is available immediately for a fixed term period of 2 years. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing new methods of incorporating nanomaterials into high temperature polymer matrices and optimising the laser sintering and FFF processes for the new nanocomposite materials.

Applicants will have knowledge of polymer processing and polymer chemistry. In particular they should have a deep understanding of material science and good knowledge, both theoretical and practical of Additive Manufacturing. Experience of the laser sintering process is required, together with a proficiency in working with nano materials and with a range of materials characterisation techniques. In addition, the candidate should be confident using all standard mechanical testing procedures (tensile, compression, 3-point bend etc).

As part of his/her duties, the successful candidate will need to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally and in writing to the consortium,

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or nearing completion in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be experienced in AM technologies, polymeric materials and nanomaterials and be able to work collaboratively.. Applicants should have a practical approach to work built on a good theoretical knowledge, be proactive, enthusiastic and able to self-manage in order to carry out the necessary characterisation, processing, testing and analysis duties.
