  Postdoctor – Oslo University Hospital HF, Rikshospitalet, Division of Surgery, Inflammatory Diseases and Transplantation, Research institute of internal medicine.

  Oslo University Hospital is a highly specialized hospital in charge of extensive regional and local hospital assignments. As Scandinavia’s largest hospital, we carry out more than 1.2 million patient treatments each year. The hospital has a nationwide responsibility for a number of national and multi-regional assignments, and has several national centers of competence. Oslo University Hospital is responsible for approximately 50 percent of all medical and health care research conducted at Norwegian hospitals, and is a significant role player within the education of a large variety of health care personnel.

  At the Research Institute for Internal Medicine (RIIM), Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet, there are two positions available as 3-year post-doctoral research fellows funded by the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. The research area is systemic inflammation in mental illness – translating mechanisms to clinical implications. The project aims to contribute to better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and consequences of enhanced inflammation and immune-activation in severe mental illness, by applying quantitative analysis of markers of inflammation and cellular senescence and evaluating these in relation to brain abnormalities (e.g., assessed by MRI), regional fat distribution and clinical parameters.

  Job description

  •The individual post-doc areas are i) computational biology, biostatistics, and bioinformatics, with a focus on analysis of large datasets including biochemical data, brain and adipose tissue imaging, genetic datasets and clinical parameters and ii) establishing and/or improving assays for markers of inflammation/immune activation, oxidative stress and aging/cellular senescence on high throughput semi-automatic systems.

  •The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the CoE NORMENT – KG Jebsen Research Centre in Psychosis, led by Professor Ole A Andreassen, which has extensive infrastructure for clinical evaluations, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, and biobank, and has a comprehensive database including clinical, genetic and brain imaging data from a large number of healthy controls and patients suffering from psychotic disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.

  •Post-doctoral fellows will work together with one focusing on bioinformatics, in collaboration with the bioinformatics group at NORMENT, and one on biochemical analysis with the aim to contribute to better understanding the underlying mechanisms and consequences of enhanced inflammation and immune-activation in severe mental illness. The research will involve identification of inflammatory candidates in psychotic disorders by microarray and proteomics, establishing assays for assessment of candidate immune markers and markers of cellular senescence and telomere/DNA damage and evaluation of associations between these markers and regional fat distribution, brain age determined by MRI and other genetic markers.

  Qualifications

  •Qualification requirements: For position i) bioinformatics, statistical and/or computational expertise and a PhD degree are requirements. Experience with tools/software (e.g. MATLAB, R, Python) and analysis of large-scale genomic data is an advantage. For position ii) a PhD in a field related to biology, biochemistry, physiology or an area that is directly translatable to proteomic-based biomedical research is required an with experience in bio-assay development is strongly favored. The post-doctoral fellows will work at RIIM at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet. A degree or education in psychiatric disorders is not a prerequisite.

  We offer

  •RIIM consists of ~60 people and 7 main research groups with background in various fields of medicine, molecular biology and biochemistry and an aim to combine clinical medicine and molecular biology to establish a bridge between bench and bedside. The research profile for IMF within the Section of Inflammatory Research (currently 4 research groups) includes all phases of this research, ranging from characterization of inflammatory profiles in various patient populations and in vitro experiments in various cells and cell lines to experimental studies in animal models, including gene modified mice, and interventional proof of concept studies in various patient populations (https://www.ous-research.no/riim/). The project will be conducted in the group of Professor Thor Ueland which focuses om measurement and use of inflammatory markers in different populations characterized by low-grade inflammation focusing on cardiovascular disease and risk, neuropsychiatric disorders, and metabolic endocrine disease.
