  Job Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate: Protein Expression in Yeasts for Biocatalysis

  Position summary:

The laboratories of the Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering constellation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI in Troy, NY) performs fundamental, exploratory and applied research to address some of our planet’s most challenging problems (group website https://grossrpi.wixsite.com/gross). The Gross group is developing new knowledge and technologies in biocatalytic routes to biobased chemicals.

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for protein expression in yeasts for biocatalysis. Of high interest is an individual who can apply his/her experience to enzyme expression in yeast systems of proteins originating from various species. Also, for enzyme engineering studies, the candidate should be able to efficiently construct reliable expression libraries in yeast systems, develop/use high-throughput assays to identify the best performers while working with protein computational scientists that provide an ability to decrease library size by rational engineering approaches. Additional skills of interest are knowledge of fundamental yeast genetics and yeast molecular biology and the ability to characterize enzyme kinetic and thermodynamic stability as well as activity under various conditions. The successful individual will work as a member of a team of scientists in the Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering constellation that includes Professors Koffas and Linhardt in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

  Other desirable skills

Experience in characterization of products by chromatographic methods (e.g. LC-MS and GC-MS). Experience in mentoring students is also a plus. The successful candidate should also enjoy collaborations with scientists and engineers outside of their discipline. To be considered for this position, the candidate must have at least two first authored publications in peer-reviewed journals in the English language where he/she is first author. We plan to fill this position within the next 3-months, so the candidate should be available to start working within that time-period.

  Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology or a related discipline.

  • Due to the highly collaborative nature of the position, excellent interpersonal and communications skills are an essential characteristic of a successful candidate.

  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and time-management skills are essential

  Working Environment

The successful candidate will work at RPI’s Center for Biotechnology & Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS, http://biotech.rpi.edu/) that serves as the primary focus of biotechnology research, training, and outreach at Rensselaer. The Center facilitates multidisciplinary research in the basic life sciences, engineering sciences, and technology development and maximizes the impact of Rensselaer’s investment to benefit society.

CBIS supports several state-of-the-art Research Cores (Analytical Biochemistry, BioImaging, Animal Science, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Fermentation, Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Proteomics, Stem Cell Biology). CBIS is one of the most advanced research facilities in the nation.

For an application to be complete, qualified candidates must apply at https://rpijobs.rpi.edu/postings/8103. Candidates will complete a short online profile, and upload a resume with the names of at least three references and pdf copies of first authored publications. It would also be helpful if the candidate can provide a brief statement of interest. Questions about this position may be directed to Professor Richard A. Gross at grossr@rpi.edu.

We welcome candidates who will bring diverse cultural, ethnic, national and international perspectives to Rensselaer’s work and campus communities. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity, Race/Gender/Veterans/Disability Employer.
