University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison)

Two NIH funded postdoctoral positions are immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Engin at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Engin lab has several exciting projects focusing on understanding the role of beta cell endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR) in type 1 diabetes pathogenesis. We apply cutting edge cellular and molecular techniques including single cell RNAseq, ATACseq and ChIPseq, imaging and use various novel genetic mouse models of the UPR and human islets to accomplish the studies (see our publications in  Sci Transl Med, 2013, Cell Metab 2020 and lab website for complete publication list).

Qualified candidate must have a recent Ph.D. and/or M.D. in molecular and cellular biology, immunology, biochemistry, or a related field. Experience in beta cell biology, T cell biology, autoimmunity, mitochondrial biology, sequencing data analysis, and animal models of disease is preferred but not required.

Applicant should possess strong laboratory and analytical skills and at least one first-author peer-reviewed research article. High level of motivation, responsibility, and independence are expected. Strong communication skills in English are essential.

The candidate is expected to work on one of the following projects: Perform mouse genetic and cell biological studies to 1) understand mechanisms by which ER stress affects the function, identity, and survival beta cells, 2) examine ER-mitochondria crosstalk or 3) uncover stressed beta cell-immune cell crosstalk in type 1 diabetes.

Job Duties

•Designs, directs, and conducts the experiments.

•Analyzes data.

•May establish new research protocols and procedures.

•Summarizes research findings, prepares manuscripts, and publishes results in research journals.

•Supervises students.

Interested candidates should email a curriculum vitae (CV), a brief statement or cover letter describing relevant work experience and research interests, and names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of 2-4 references to fengin@wisc.edu
