Job description

Edinburgh Napier University is looking to appoint a full-time Research Fellow for the prestigious 3-year ESRC funded INTERACT project (Investigating New Types of Engagement, Response and Contact Technologies in Policing), led by the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr Liz Aston, based in the School of Applied Sciences. Edinburgh Napier University is proud to host the Scottish Institute for Policing Research.

INTERACT is major new research project that will examine how the use of new technologies is changing police-public engagement. Over recent years, the ways in which members of the public can contact the police have undergone significant changes. As a result, the public is increasingly likely to encounter police in ways that are 'technologically-mediated' by new communication technologies; such as online reporting of crimes. The project team at Edinburgh Napier, Keele, Dundee and University College London will explore police and public experiences of technologically-mediated contact and develop understandings of police legitimacy in changing times.

The role

The Research Fellow will make a central contribution to the organisation and delivery of the INTERACT project, undertaking qualitative fieldwork (interviews, observations and focus groups) with the police and members of the public, primarily at two research sites in Scotland. The role involves planning research activity in collaboration with the research team, analysing data, disseminating findings at conferences and preparing joint peer-reviewed publications. It will involve managing aspects of the project such as ethical approval, liaising with partners and organising events. The Research Fellow will be provided mentoring, training and development opportunities, including the opportunity to deliver some specialist teaching where appropriate.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking to attract a highly motivated post-doctoral social scientist who is experienced in the use of qualitative methods, analysis and presentation of data. You will have experience of managing projects to completion, from ethical approval through to write up and dissemination. You will be organised and work effectively as part of a team, as well as showing initiative to work independently. Excellent interpersonal skills are important to developing positive working relationships, as is an ability to communicate with a wide range of individuals. We would ideally like to attract a candidate with experience of working in a policing or technology-related academic context and a track record of publishing in high quality journals.

Please see role descriptor here and contact Dr Aston for more details (l.aston@napier.ac.uk)
